VR meditation Neurofeedback Environment Design

Visualized the depth of users’ meditations, based on realtime EEG, as biofeedback to guide novice meditators into deep meditations more quickly.

Contracted by the Institute for Advanced Consciousness Studies to research and design this VR experience.

r21 NIH grant proposal to study interoception in meditators using a haptics bodysuit

Contributed to study design, theoretical rationale, and outcome measures selection selection for a study in which we use a full-body haptics bodysuit to investigate whether interoceptive awareness is the mechanism by which Vipassana meditation leads to positive emotional outcomes. R21 grant proposal submitted to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH, part of the NIH).

Worked in collaboration with Principal Investigator at the Institute for Advanced Consciousness Studies.

Threadcasting, a media format for live-streamed texting

Collaboratively conceived of and prototyped a novel media format for livestreamed text conversations, called Threadcasting. Hosted several MVP threadcasts with various guests on different messaging platforms, with 10+ audience members viewing and interacting with the conversations in realtime.

Realtime Respiration detection for MEditation biofeedback

Enabled users to see their breath visualized as an object in VR. Designed an implemented a realtime respiration measurement system using the Polar H10 sensor.

Completed this work in collaboration with Lynda Joy Gerry at the University of Auckland’s Empathic Computing Lab.

CEO of a virtual reality startup

Launched the alpha of our VR productivity tool (2017). Originally inspired by the Method of Loci, and based on the science of embodied spatial cognition, we worked on a 3D-native “visuospatial language” composed of visuospatial metaphors found in languages across cultures, as identified in the cognitive linguistics literature.

long essay / short book on meditation and managing chronic health issues

~40,000 words written, ~10 books and dozens of papers read. Personal story of my multisystem adverse reaction to an antibiotic and how my meditation practice emerged from that experience. Philosophical, scientific, and practical investigation of meditative techniques for sensing and regulating the body.
